After analyzing the dive log data from scuba divers on DiveBuddy.com, I’ve come up with a few interesting statistics that I thought I would share. This data is taken from over 3000 logged dives.

Most common tanks:
1. AL - 80cf/11L (86%)
2. Steel - 100cf/13L (3%)
3. Steel - 80cf/11L (2%)
4. Steel - 77cf/12L (2%)

Most common exposure suits:
1. Full wetsuit - 7mm (25%)
2. Full wetsuit - 3mm (18%)
3. Full wetsuit - 5mm (15%)
4. Shorty wetsuit - 3mm (8%)
5. Drysuit (5%)

The average depth for a scuba diver is 54 feet.
The average time underwater is 52 minutes.

Here is the breakdown of average depth and time by State (I’m only showing States with 10 or more logged dives):

I’d be interested in seeing stats for Washington state if you have any

For Washington state, the average bottom time is 46 mins...the average depth is 55 feet.

I’m pretty new to SCUBA, but does this mean that the nice folks in MN are air hogs? ;-)

I bet it has more to do with the water temp you northerners are diving in. Cold water = breathing faster

Great stats! But I am surprised the average depth in NJ is 67 feet. Here are very few dive spots that shallow. Most of the wrecks are 70-140ft...

Great Stats! Thanks.

Wow! it’s interesting that the average time under water in minutes is almost the same as the depth in feet. I didn’t expect an average of 52 minutes along with an average of 54 feet.
Greg are you going to break this down any more. It would be interesting to see geographical info.

I will see what I can do.

I just posted the averages by State...MI has an average of 35 feet for 43 minutes.

Thanks Greg. Very cool stuff.
