Most of the time that problem can be caused be opening the condensate drain too much and unloading the contact between the ram and piston on the 3rd stage. Back pressure is needed to keep both parts in contact, which manifests itself as a slight tapping noise. It could be lubrication, but most of that is passive to the unloading.
