If the substance lives up to its promises, it could have a lot of really cool applications—for example, scuba divers could potentially leave their tanks at home, says McKenzie. “A few grains contain enough oxygen for one breath, and as the material can absorb oxygen from the water around the diver and supply the diver with it, the diver will not need to bring more than these few grains."

If this is real, the possibilities are amazing!

"It is also interesting that the material can absorb and release oxygen many times without losing the ability. It is like dipping a sponge in water, squeezing the water out of it and repeating the process over and over again," Christine McKenzie explains.
Once the oxygen has been absorbed you can keep it stored in the material until you want to release it. The oxygen can be released by gently heating the material or subjecting it to low oxygen pressures.

So those Jedi breathing devices from Star Wars may be possible one day...minus the miniature air tanks?

"A small breather that fits snugly into a Jedi Knight’s utility belt, the A99 aquata breather is a compact mouthpiece designed to supply its wearer with a breathable gas. The A99 has advanced filters to allow it to function underwater, in a vacuum, and in certain poisonous environments. The A99 has a number of variants to accommodate a variety of alien physiologies. The A99’s miniature compressed air tanks can supply two hours of oxygen."

This looks to be where they could make a cartridge for the gill mask concept that was posted earlier.
