Hi, I just booked a 2 week trip to Hawaii this May, and Im looking to go to the 4 islands (Big, Maui, Oahu, Kauai). Im really looking forward to doing as much scuba diving as I can (at least 3-4 dives), and would just like to have some recommendations. Ive read that Kona cant be missed... anything else that is an absolute MUST?

My only experience was at the Great Barrier Reef 3 years ago, and loved it!

thanks in advance.

If you want real fun! or DPV certification, I recommend Kauai Down Under on Kauai . Its fun shore, DPV dives. Mike is great and you get to ride the hands free TUSA 7 which is really cool if you get certified for DPV.

Molokini is a must when on Maui. It’s a crescent shaped volcano that lost on side to the ocean. Kihei and Waileia have the closest proximity to the Kihei boat ramp. The boats leave around 6:30 am, and I am back in the condo by 10am with two dives completed. So great dive ops in that area are B&B, Ed Robinson and Mike Severns. B&B has the fastest boat and leaves earliest, so you are the first at Molokini. The shore diving is outstanding. Shaka Doug does guided shore dives out of Kihei. If you are in Laihaina or north of there, Extended Horizons goes to Lanai for some great dives. I little bit rough to cross over to the next island and they leave late.

My favorite dives to date while on Kauai was the Niihau trip (The Forbidden Island) through SeaSport Divers out of Poipu. It’s a long boat ride, but well worth it. Super rough on the way back so wear a patch. Spectacular diving. Best shot at diving with the near extinct Monk Seals.

My favorite dives to date while on Maui was the Cathedrals on Lanai. I think every dive shop goes there.

From Rich-D-Fish above "Super rough on the way back so wear a patch". I can’t agree more. On the way back I thought it was amazing that "I paid" for hell (LOL). I survived and did not loose lunch, but it was not FUN at all and it seems like forever. I thought it was truly amazing that the boat crew does that all the time! I am not sure if they could pay me enough to do that return trip every day.... Gives me great respect for them. Actually, I thought, my own opinion, of course, that some of the spots closer to Kauai were about as good. Up to you. But, Rich-D-Fish is correct about the Monk Seals. I have seen them resting on the beaches in Popiu, but not while diving on/near Kauai itself.
