Looking for a buddy in Houston, TX

Hey everyone! I learned to dive 2 years ago in Florida. I recently moved to Houston to be closer to family, it’s great, except my gills are starting to dry out! I’m looking for a buddy to go diving with. I have only dove at 1 lake here (288 I believe). I want to check out Blue Lagoon and other local dive spots. I’m pretty much up for any dive. I’m very experienced and I am also a dive master.

My family and I just moved from north of Houston to north of Austin, last summer. We lived close to the Blue Lagoon actually. Now we live close to Lake Travis, which is a decent dive spot. The Comal River is also pretty close to us. If you ever find yourself near Austin, let me know and we can try to organize a dive.

chumclub.org has active members in the area I know. They have monthly meetings. Blue Lagoon is close and popular. If you just went there when they first open while the weather is nice you’ll meet people that are really going to dive. Talk people as they come in. I haven’t been on his boat in awhile but Captain Beard captainbeardcharters.com can take you out on some fun rig trips. If sign up for his boat you’ll find a buddy on the boat. Mammoth Lake, 288 Lake, and Smith Lake are places people dive that are close to Houston.

Greg, I’d actually love to travel to Austin to dive! I’m used to driving from Orlando to West Palm Beach or even the Keys. So 4 hour dive trips are nothing for me lol.

Bill, I have looked up Chum before, but I’m one of the youngest members...which is kind of awkward :-\

But thanks for all the awesome dive spot ideas! It’s really different diving here. I can’t just drive out to the coast and hop in. I actually have to plan here :-O

Chum is old to you? Maybe this area is weird but I really don’t see that many young divers. Come to think of it I can only remember two I ever met that were under 30. I swear 90% are 50+ around here. I don’t know why the average age of divers is so high but it’s probably due to money. It’s kind of frustrating to me how many places I want to go but I can’t because the divers I know just aren’t physically capable of any but the easiet shore entries. Older divers typically have old sports and traffic accident injuries that severely limit them.

Yeah, in Florida, we have a few who are older, but mostly 20-35. The older divers are usually in phenomenal shape. I guess that’s just the "health mentality" there. It’s a lot cheaper to dive there. Tons of springs with $5 entry fees. Boat dives will run an avg $80. Heck, even the training is cheaper there. There’s a much bigger market.

I know some dives I have learned to like that only cost me gas. I balk at paying $20 at the various Texas scuba parks. I hate paying $20 to dive a mud hole when I know ones that are free. But I get stuck going to a scuba parks sometimes because my only dive buddy choice has, for example, a messed up knee from the dirt bike accident when he was 22. He just thought he got over it in a month. 25 years later that knee isn’t worth a crap anymore. Scuba parks have stairs that make it easy for those types to get in and out of the water.

Whenever ya’ll want to go, I’m down. Let’s plan something soon. I’m trying to get my dad to get certified soon so he can go. He’s pretty adventurous.

Also, I’m having issues registering for CHUM :( Did anyone else have that issue?

Are you interested and available for a dive trip to the Flower Gardens with Fling Charters on the weekend of 8th May thru 10th? That is Mothers Day Weekend.

Cost is $585 p/p which includes 7 dives, including 1 night dive. Meals and most non-alcoholic drinks are included. You can find more info on the trip at their web site. flingcharters.com Boat departs on Friday night and returns late on Sunday afternoons.

If you are interested in diving Mammoth lake this weekend, I am looking for a dive buddy for Friday around noon’ish, and/or Saturday/Sunday. Just let me know as I don’t want to drive out there on Friday if I haven’t lined up a dive buddy in advance. I have been told that on Saturday or Sunday, there wouldn’t be any problems with just showing up and finding a dive buddy.

Hmmm....that’s a bit out my range right now. I’m moving soon, so all my funds are tied up in there. I may be able to go sunday, but i’m not 100% yet

Hi,

Did you find dive buddies? Or anyone else is interested? I’m interested to try some local spots around Houston: Mammoth Lake, Blue Lagoon or whatever. I’m in 20-35 age group and have no problems of entering water from anywhere. However, I haven’t dove for a few years after I got certified (got bored with local muddy lakes in Wisconsin) and I need 1-2 easy 20-30 feet dives to get rust off.

Let me know if interested.

Hello,
I am certainly interested in hooking up with some local dives. Making our schedules align is going to be our challenge.

I was trying to go offshore weekend after this holiday weekend. If not offshore, definitely will head to Mammoth Lake. I have another local dive buddy that I am planning this trip with and you are welcome to come along with us. Not sure if it will be Saturday or Sunday just yet.

If you were put out with muddy lakes in Wisconsin, you may not be impressed with Mammoth. Offshore may be your better option if you are looking for viz.

I will be in touch!

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I’m interested to go offshore or Mammoth Lake the weekend after Memorial Day (if I understood you right). Keep me posted through this website or through dvdvbrn—gmail—com
In the meantime, I plan to go to Mammoth Lake this Saturday and find someone to dive with on the spot. If anyone interested, let me know through email above or website.

I was bored with Wisconsin muddy lakes but now I kind of miss them. Actually, there was a lot of fish in many lakes except some quarries.
