The Frio River flows from Real (pronounced Ree-All) County into Uvalde County and continues on south. The Frio River around Concan, Texas is popular to summer vacationers for tubing and swimming.
There are two "holes" deep enough for a dive which are found between Yeargan’s River Bend and Happy Hollow, and the second is south of the Garner State Park dam. Yeargan’s River Bend and Happy Hollow are both located on US 83 approximately one mile north of FM 1050.
Yeargan’s River Bend (
http://www.riverben.com/) has access to the dive site upriver, but only offers access to their campers. The site can also be accessed from Happy Hollow (
http://www.onthefrio.com/) for a day use fee of $2/person. The dive site is located up river from Happy Hollow, but it is an easy swim against a light current.
The dive site itself offers excellent visibility, an easy drift which you can swim against, and shallow depths. The site is approximately 300 yards long and is abundant with catfish, various perch, tilapia, and largemouth bass. Because of the vacationers who tube the river, you can often find little goodies such as sunglasses or other dropped items.
The site stays busy during the summer and the best time to dive would be either early (before 10 AM) or late (after 5 PM). Fall, Winter, and Spring (weekdays) offer more secluded diving. If diving during the summer (early or late), be sure to use your dive flag and watch for people jumping from the nearby cliffs.
