Being south Jersey I’ve always assumed these stories had beer involved. In swimming holes I’ve been in that hand accross the leg was a tree limb.

Sorry but this is not a dive site!

Good news-bad news, It’s a good thing we didn’t carry in a ton of gear and I took out some litter.

The bad news, I’d read that it got soupy in there during the summer. Parking lot is a swamp, river is running too fast to paddle upstream, the bugs are out, the swamp and the river overflowed into the Blue
Hole which is now cedar water. For those of you not from the NJ Pineland’s that’s tea water brown, not dirty, just brown.

I used the sonar and the deepest I found was 9.9 feet but most of the deep part is 7 feet with the edges being 3 to 4 feet. Sorry but the myth is wrong, this is no bottomless pit, karst, cave or well :(

I borrowed my step-son-in-laws Fish Eye which is a drop cam on a fishing pole and checked out the bottom, it’s mud, didn’t see any tree limbs or fish which is probably why I didn’t see any fishing line either.

With the swamp water flowing into the Blue Hole during the summer I did show a surface temp of 72. RayC

During the winter I did dip the sonar to take a temperature reading and it said 47.5f, less you think I did not chill it down before taking a reading, the air was 32f The legend also says the Devil’s Bathtub never freezes so that part of the myth is true.

From NJ Div. of Fish and Wildlife
"Mr. Clark,
No swimming, and therefore no scuba diving, is allowed in state Wildlife Management Areas. That said, I am cc-ing this to regional superintendent Laurie Pettigrew so she is aware of your interest in the "Blue Hole/Devil’s Bathtub". I do not think a special permit would be issued for your dive, "

For those looking to put this in the GPS, the nearest business is A&A Salvage, 241 E. Piney Hollow Rd. Williamstown 08094 RayC

The legendary "blue hole" at Winslow WMA is a circular pool of water about fifteen(?) feet wide(Looks like 150" to me, RayC). Created by a spring that no longer flows, the water is crystal clear to depths of almost twelve feet. The legend is that the water is ice cold and bottomless, and a home of the Jersey Devil.

To reach the blue hole, Turn Left onto the first sand road off of Piney Hollow Road, 0.7 miles from Rt. 322. (That would be north of AA Auto Salvage)(There are 2 rusty white pipes with orange tops on either side of the drive, RayC) Continue a short way through the woods (.3 miles) to a small parking lot with a "shooting range closed" sign.(No sign on 2/26/15) From here, hike the first trail to the right (Blue markers on trees) - you will pass through bogs of blueberry and cranberry and arrive at a clearing with the famed pond. The hike is less than 1 mile total. It is not advised in wet weather as the sandy trail will be mostly underwater.

You could canoe or kayak to the washed out bridge but there doesn’t seem to be an easy launch at Piney Hollow rd and the river, however there is a nice blackberry patch there so all was not lost.

How much (if any) snow down there right now. If I head down to Beneath the Sea I might check this site out. Time permitting...
