Cause of Sinking Collision w/SS Montana

In Brief

The best known and one of the most popular wrecks offshore VA.

After colliding with the Montana on her maiden voyage the John Morgan split in half and found it’s way to the bottom after claiming 18 lives. The cargo of Ford trucks, Caterpillar tractors, motorcycles, Willy’s jeeps, Valentine tanks, machine guns and P-39 airplanes, as well as hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo (as large as 5 inches) is still littered around the bottom and there are plenty of artifacts and fat tautog for the diver who wants a momento and a good dinner.

This is the most popular dive site here in Virginia, although I am sick of diving her, I know that the
first few times here are a wreck divers dream.

She went down on her maiden voyage with a full cargo of arms for the war. The wreck can be hard
at times with vis. down to 3 or 4 ft and with a debris field that is confusing.
The wreck is easy to get lost on. There is a monument placed on this wreck to the men and women who lost their lives in WW Two. This wreck is worth the trip to see it.
