I used to be pretty uncomfortable when I started diving too and I still prefer really simple equipment. Have you tried just looking for a smaller mask? If you have a small face, you might want to try a youth-sized mask. They’re easy to clear (b/c they’re small) and usually have a lower profile.
I had a purge mask once and didn’t care for it. My friend uses one but he says it’s hard to pinch his nose when he needs to valsalva.
