though I’m not a lady. most I have dove with just go with a ponytail. some do wear a hood to keep in in controll. I like the spandex hood idea for warm water.
A mask strap cover is a must to try and keep hair untangled.
Hope this helps till some women answer you.

I have very long hair (waist length) and it took me a while to figure out how to manage my hair. I used to braid my hair high up but the little short hairs around my face would bug me and get in the way. Then one time I had to dive with a hood because of the cooler water temps and loved how it kept the hair out of the way. I don’t even have to braid or tie it anymore. It’s great!
And here’s another tip. I also bring conditioner in my dive bag and put it in my hair before and between dives so it doesn’t get all tangled or damaged by the salt. I got that idea from a dive boat I went on in Florida.
Try these and let us know how it worked out for you.

Also not a lady but...at the Monterey Bay Aquarium I saw women diving in the tanks with ponytail threaded through a hole in the hood...never seen that anywhere else.
On the one hand, keeping the neoprene closer to the scalp would seem to be a good thing, but if the hole just lets in a ton of water it might do more harm than good. Anyway I’ve wondered ever since how that worked for them. If the aquarium water is the same temp as the ocean then that’s pretty cold.

I cut mine really short and I love it!

My hair is just an inch or so past my shoulders. When I dive in warm water, I used to put it up in a pony tail, but the bungee kept coming out and I would end up losing it somewhere in the ocean. So now I just wear it loose in the water and it’s usually not a problem. Though it can be a pain when it gets caught in my mask clip.

I am soooo glad you asked this... I have very thick hair and loose allot when it gets stuck on the velcro on the back of my dive suit or gets caught in the mask clips or worst doesn’t allow my mask to seal well against my face. The hood smashes it down so it sticks out of the hood. I wore it loose a few times and the fish has a field day trying to make a new home in it; was sort of cool though. Then, I thought of cutting a hold in the hood.. for a pony tail but not sure that was a good idea. Anyway.. I’ll be reading all responses and see if some of them work. I keep saying that I’d love to just shave the whole thing off... but hummm well ..... just a thought :)

My hair is about shoulder length but has layers and it use to float all over and usually in my face - pony tail holders would come out and tried the dew rag but that would come off too. Finally I found some cheap rubberish-plastic headbands at Target or Walmart - $3 for two of them. The band is about 1-2 wide and have a coated ruber band bottom - it keeps the hair out of my face plus out of my mask seal - love them!! Look at the picture link below (it’s also listed in my profile) - I have a blue & white band on.

Thank you very much for all the replies, they are very helpful, not to me but hopefully to others. I hope they keep coming in.

I have shoulder length hair, a bit longer, but in layers so it’s always everywhere. Best thing I have come up with is the doo rags. There are several dive sites which cell them, but I did an ebay search and found some as well.

I am not a lady either...... but I dive with seagurl and she has really long beautiful hair...... the Madusa look seems to be a pain in the neck..... but fun to watch!! I have an old wet suit that was a kids size, I am going to cut a few wide rings from the sleeves for seagurl to see if we can tame the beast!! :) lol I think they will make great hair bob’s. and by making them about 3/4 of an inch wide they should be easy to use.

Hey! I like the pony tail through the hood idea.... kinda a Barbra Eden " I dream of Jeannie" thing going there!

I have long hair and I often put it in a pony tail and wear a beanie, this minimizes, but does not remove the issues. I also use a neoprene mask strap, which keeps the mask strap from tangling in my hair if I dont wear a beanie. One thing I have discovered, is that pony tail holders and wet hair is not a good combination. Taking them out and getting my hair straightened back out is destroying my hair. I dont do well with conditioner, and have been struggling for other ideas for a while now.

Update.... Tried the plastic headband and it does a great job keeping it off my face. I also use leave-in conditioner in between dives and my hair looks so much better.... Such an unglamerous sport :)
